Destination Greece: Happily Ever After in Halkidiki - Travel review

EVER DREAMED OF BEING A PRINCESS? At Eagles Palace Hotel & Spa in Greece, a fairy tale holiday unfolds from the moment you open your suitcase.

A three-hour flight to Thessaloniki, and a 90-minute transfer via lush green hills, wild flowers and olive groves, and here on the third peninsular of Halkidiki, cutting into the diamanté- encrusted Aegean sea, sits Eagles Palace, one of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

Mysterious Mount Athos plays backdrop and peaks out to equally captivating views of a blue flag beach, perfect pool and manicured gardens. Eagles Palace is a five-star haven.

A third generation family business, there’s a real sense of being at home here. Staff members are dedicated – both welcoming and attentive – without being over the top. It’s a friendly place to be, and an elegant one at that.

Extensively refurbished for 2014, secrecy and solitude can be found in any one of the quiet corners designed specially for guests to enjoy. One such area is the courtyard, with its art, cascading water and colourful flora; it charms and calms.

Although tranquility overwhelms, make no mistake, children are welcome; indeed, they are brilliantly catered for. And not just at mealtimes, when organic – and if required, allergy- friendly – food will delight, but also at the play park, in the children’s pool, and at the efficiently run kids’ club – where professional, qualified staff welcome in your little ones.

The children have fun. I found them in chef hats, rolling out the cookie dough they’d made (they could then eat the biscuits after dinner). A daily programme is on offer, leaving parents free to do as you wish.

Should you tire of lazing, activities are available. From watersports to a gym and spa, there is plenty to keep you occupied. It's just a shame we had to get back on the plane; I didn't want the fairy tale to end.
