I recently came across a collection of pocket sized books that are perfect boredom busters for children as they head into the school holidays.

Long journeys can especially benefit from the i-SPY On a car journey, which encourages children to take in the world as it rushes by. From road signs to cars carrying boats, they can tick off whatever they spot little by little, helping the journey pass.
Back at home, Sofia (my bug mad 4YO) took on the challenge of spotting as many insects as possible in the i-SPY Creepy Crawlies book. Not one to give up, she was at it for ages. Mummy meanwhile was hoping she wouldn't find any!
These books are hugely fun, yet also educational. Not least because they are packed full of information, but also because they encourage children to participate in maths. Each time the child spots an item in their book they can pencil in the points - in time totting up an overall score. If they find they have 1,000 points or over they can send off for a certificate and a badge - the badges from 60 years ago are collectors items now!

Engaging and fun, these pocket books are a super idea and a novel way to entice children out and about and away from all things digital.
